UTROPA

BWA Tarnów

17.09-16.10.2022

Curator: Stanisław Ruksza

Utropa consists of the artist’s latest paintings created in the past two years. They show a distinct change. On the one hand the artist uses his tried and tested recognizable painter’s language based on surrealist poetics and organic expressionist abstraction. On the other hand, the new paintings appear to be tougher, more aggressive, with a darker tonality, leaving more space for figurative elements introduced more confidently than before. Some of them have been made through scraping/ripping the paint. The artist also experiments with painting shapes other than rectangular. That evolution of Kukla’s style suits the anxieties, emotions and contents which inspired them – fascination with the body explored through the poles of pain and pleasure, beauty and ugliness, life and death, but also fears and the need for security.
